A new study shows that banning or charging for plastic bags really helps reduce the amount of plastic bag litter on US beaches.
Areas with these policies saw a substantial decrease—at least 25%—in plastic bags as a portion of total beach litter compared to places without them.
Statewide bans were more successful than local ones, especially where the plastic bag problem was already significant.
While this is good news, the overall number of plastic bags is still rising, implying more comprehensive strategies are needed.
