The UK has reached an agreement with Mauritius to return the Chagos Islands, including the strategically important Diego Garcia military base, which will remain under UK control.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy defended the deal, stating that the status quo was not sustainable and that the agreement ensures the base's long-term security.
The deal also provides for the return of Chagossians, who were forcibly removed from the islands in the 1960s and 1970s.
Lammy emphasized that the deal does not set a precedent for other British territories, such as Gibraltar or the Falklands.
