A humpback whale entangled in 800kg of fishing gear off the Gippsland coast was rescued after a week-long effort by specialized crews.
The whale was spotted near Loch Sport on June 23rd but disappeared until it was seen near Lake Tyers on June 29th.
Rescue crews attached a tracker to the whale and on June 30th, successfully removed 800kg of tangled ropes and buoys, allowing the whale to swim freely.
The rescue operation involved a collaborative effort from the Victorian Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action, Victorian Fisheries Authority, and Parks Victoria.
