In Amsterdam, there's a statue honoring soldiers from the Boer War, a conflict that occurred in South Africa between 1899 and 1902.
The statue, a simple depiction of a farmer with a gun, was created in 1900 to remember those who fought for the Boer republics.
Because many Boers had Dutch roots, the Netherlands strongly supported the Boer cause, sending about 2,000 Dutch volunteers to fight alongside them.
This statue, while less elaborate than other monuments in the city, serves as a powerful symbol of the Dutch involvement in the Boer War.
