Alejandro Martínez, a journalist known for his reporting on violent crime in Mexico's Guanajuato state, was tragically killed while under police protection.
Unknown assailants opened fire on the car carrying Martínez and his bodyguards, fatally wounding him with a gunshot to the head.
Martínez, who ran a popular news outlet on Facebook, had been under police protection since surviving a previous attack in 2022.
Mexico continues to be a highly dangerous country for journalists, with over 150 media workers killed since 1994, highlighting the ongoing threat to press freedom.
