Marathon Oil has agreed to pay a record $241.5 million to settle allegations of illegal emissions in North Dakota.
The company's oil and gas facilities released methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, and other pollutants, violating the Clean Air Act.
The settlement includes a $64.5 million fine, the largest ever levied for such violations at stationary infrastructure.
Marathon will also invest $177 million in reducing future emissions, including on the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation.
