Marathon Oil, a major oil and gas company, has been ordered to pay a record-breaking $241.5 million for violating environmental laws.
The company released methane, a harmful greenhouse gas, and other pollutants from its facilities in North Dakota.
This is the biggest fine ever imposed for violating the Clean Air Act at stationary infrastructure.
Marathon must also spend $177 million to reduce future emissions and comply with environmental regulations.
